Monero vs Zcash vs Dash

Short answer: Monero is the only one of the three that is private by default: every transaction hides sender, receiver and amount, with no option to turn it off. Zcash has stronger cryptography for its shielded transactions but leaves privacy optional, so much of its volume is transparent. Dash is a payments coin with an optional CoinJoin mixer, which is the weakest privacy of the three. If the requirement is privacy you cannot forget to enable, the answer is Monero.

How Monero does it

Monero hides three things at once, on every transaction, with no user choice involved. Ring signatures mix your real input with decoys pulled from the chain, so an observer sees a set of possible senders rather than one. Stealth addresses mean the address written on-chain is a one-time key that only you can link to your wallet, so your published address never appears in the ledger. RingCT hides the amount while still proving the sums add up. The result is a chain where the only reliably public facts are that a transaction happened, roughly how large it was in bytes, and what fee it paid.

The cost is size and speed: Monero transactions are larger than transparent ones, and the chain grows faster because of it. The benefit is that there is no transparent pool to accidentally use.

How Zcash does it

Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs, which are mathematically stronger than ring signatures for hiding a sender: a shielded Zcash transaction reveals nothing about sender, receiver or amount, rather than hiding them in a set of decoys. The catch is optionality. Zcash supports transparent addresses that behave exactly like Bitcoin, and a large share of activity has historically used them, which weakens the anonymity set for everyone who does shield.

Zcash also offers viewing keys, which makes it the easier of the two to work with in a setting that needs audits or disclosure, and it is the reason Zcash keeps listings where Monero loses them.

How Dash does it

Dash is best understood as a fast payments chain that includes an optional mixer. PrivateSend is CoinJoin: your coins are mixed with those of other users through masternodes in rounds, which breaks simple chain analysis but leaves amounts and the transaction graph visible. Dash itself has argued for years that it is not a privacy coin, and its core selling points are InstantSend confirmations and low fees.

Which one should you use?

  • Privacy that cannot be forgotten. Monero. There is no transparent mode, so there is no way to leak by using the wrong address type.
  • Strong cryptography with the option to disclose. Zcash, if you will genuinely use shielded addresses and value viewing keys for accounting.
  • Cheap fast payments where privacy is a bonus. Dash, with the understanding that PrivateSend is mixing rather than confidential transactions.
  • Availability on regulated exchanges. Zcash and Dash are listed in more places; Monero has been delisted from most large venues and trades through swap services and peer markets instead.

FAQ

Is Monero really untraceable?

On-chain, there is no public link between sender and receiver and no visible amount, and no analytics firm has demonstrated a general method of breaking that. What does leak is metadata around the chain: the IP a transaction was broadcast from if you did not use Tor or your own node, exchange records if the coins passed through a verified account, and anything you disclose yourself.

Why is Zcash listed where Monero is not?

Because transparent Zcash transactions look like Bitcoin to a compliance team, and viewing keys give a supervised provider a way to inspect shielded ones when required. Monero offers no equivalent at the protocol level, which is exactly what its users want and exactly what regulated venues cannot work with.

Can I swap between them?

Yes, and no account is needed. Swapuz supports XMR pairs directly, including XMR to BTC and XMR to USDT, with a 0.8% service fee plus the network fee shown before you confirm.

Which is the best long-term hold?

That is a market question rather than a technical one, and this article does not answer it. Technically, Monero has the strongest default privacy, Zcash the strongest cryptography in its shielded pool, and Dash the clearest focus on payments. Where each one trades in five years depends on regulation as much as on code.
